Healthcare SEO

Healthcare SEO Follows Its Own Rules

Healthcare SEO means the same technical and content work as regular SEO, run under stricter rules. Google treats medical pages as YMYL content — Your Money or Your Life — its highest-scrutiny tier. A tactic that works for an online store can get a medical page demoted instead of just ignored.

HIPAA adds a layer regular marketing never has to think about: what you can track, quote, or publish about a patient. This page covers exactly why that matters, and what we do about it every month.

The Angle

Google Holds Medical Content to a Higher Standard

Healthcare SEO answers a harder question than regular SEO does. Google does not just ask “is this page relevant.” For medical topics, it asks “can this practice be trusted with someone’s health decision.” That second question changes almost everything below it.

Google calls medical content YMYL: Your Money or Your Life. It sits in the highest-scrutiny tier its quality raters use, next to finance and safety topics. A trick that works fine on an online store — thin pages, unproven claims, no named author — can get a medical page pushed down, or flagged as unreliable, instead of just ignored.

That extra scrutiny shows up as E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authority, and trust. In plain terms, it means a byline. Who wrote the page, who checked it for accuracy, and whether that reviewer’s credentials show up on the page itself, not just claimed in a footer. A page with no named author and no reviewer reads as unverified, and Google’s own guidance treats it that way.

HIPAA sits on top of all of this, and it covers choices most industries never think twice about. A retargeting pixel on a patient-facing page can reveal that one visitor searched for one condition. A cheerful reply to a review that confirms someone was a patient, or names their treatment, can trigger a real complaint.

This already happened. In March 2022, the Department of Health and Human Services fined a dental practice $50,000. The dentist had replied to a bad Yelp review with the patient’s name, their main complaint, and the treatment they were sent for. The reply was public. So was the fine. Source.

Local visibility carries its own weight, separate from any of this. The map pack and insurance-network directories often decide who gets the call before a single word of content does. A patient filtering by “in-network” never even reaches the page a content fix improved.

And more and more, ranking and being named are two different outcomes. AI-written answers now sit above the normal results for many health questions.

The Method

The Method We Run Every Month

The steps below run monthly, in this order, for every specialty we serve. It is not a menu. Each step depends on the one before it.

repeatsmonthly123456Entity auditReviewerTechnicalLocal signalsAI trackingReputation
  • Entity audit

We check whether your practice is described the same way everywhere: your site, your listings, your insurance-directory profiles, and every other mention of you online. Mismatched details are the single most common reason a search engine, or an AI system, can't confidently name a practice.

  • Reviewer-verified content

Every page we touch gets a byline and a named reviewer with credentials you can check. This closes the E-E-A-T gap most competitor pages leave wide open.

  • Technical foundation

Schema that correctly marks you as a medical provider, Core Web Vitals inside Google's own limits, and a page structure crawlers can actually read.

  • Local and directory signals

Your Google Business Profile and the insurance directories patients actually filter through, brought in line with the entity work from step one.

  • AI-answer tracking

The same method behind our free visibility check: real patient questions, sent to a live AI engine once a month, counting how often you're actually named.

  • Reputation system, built HIPAA-safe

Review-reply templates that never confirm a visit, name a condition, or invite a complaint, plus ongoing monitoring so a problem gets caught before it goes public.

What We’ve Observed

What’s Changed With AI Answers

We’re telling you what we’ve observed, not what any vendor has confirmed.

AI answer engines seem to reward the same signals that already matter for E-E-A-T — a named author, a checkable reviewer, and matching entity data across the web. We can’t confirm that from any AI company’s own rules, because none of them publish how their answers get built. What we can say is this: in our own monthly checks, practices with that structure in place get named more often than practices without it.

A page can hold a strong spot and still never show up in the answer a patient reads.

That’s why our free visibility check counts citations, not rankings, and why we track both scans apart every month. Read more about the method behind that on our AI search visibility page.

By Specialty

Built Differently by Specialty

The method above stays the same. What changes is which two decisions your patients are actually splitting between.

Dental

Dental patients split into two decisions on two different clocks. An emergency search — a cracked tooth at 9pm — gets answered in minutes, usually by whoever shows the clearest hours and phone number first. An elective search — comparing Invisalign against braces — gets researched for months. We run a separate query set for each, every month.

Dermatology

Dermatology carries the same split in a different shape: medical patients and cosmetic patients. A medical search — a changing mole, a rash that won’t clear — needs speed and a calm, clear answer. A cosmetic search — filler, laser, a specific brand name — needs real procedure detail, handled carefully under the same YMYL rules.

What’s Included

The Same Three Tiers, Built Around Healthcare Rules

The engagement tiers don’t change by specialty. What changes is the entity work, the query set, and the reviewer credentials each scan gets built around.

TierPriceBest for
Visibility$1,500/moSingle-location practices that need their entity data fixed and their first reviewer-verified pages built.
Growth$3,500/moPractices with real local competition and no HIPAA-checked reputation system in place yet.
Market Leader$7,500/moMulti-location or DSO-affiliated groups running the same work across several practices at once.

Every tier includes the reviewer-verified content and HIPAA-checked reputation work described above. None of it is a paid add-on. Full feature lists and annual pricing live on our pricing page.

Who This Isn’t For

We Turn Down More Practices Than We Take On

We’d rather tell you now than three months in.

  • Fewer than 20 reviews

Visibility work on a thin review profile just points more people at a problem you haven't fixed yet.

  • Need results in 30 days

AI citations tend to move faster than patient volume does. Expect the two to shift on different clocks.

  • Won't add a named medical reviewer

Without one, the E-E-A-T gap stays open no matter what else changes on the page.

  • Looking for the cheapest option

Cheaper agencies rarely run reviewer-verified content or HIPAA-checked reputation work. The price gap is usually that missing work.

  • Already at capacity

More visibility just means more calls you can't answer. Fix capacity first, then come back.

Questions

Before You Ask

We already rank on page one for our city and specialty. Isn't that enough?

Ranking answers "can they find the page." It says nothing about whether an AI answer engine names you, or whether your reviewer credentials pass Google's own YMYL bar. Both sit outside a normal ranking report.

Do you handle the HIPAA side, or is that on us?

We build every template and reply process to avoid the exposures described above: no confirmed visits, no named conditions, no treatment details in a public reply. Your own compliance officer or counsel still signs off. We are not a legal substitute.

How is this different from what our current SEO company already does?

Ask them who your named medical reviewer is, and whether that person's credentials show up on the page. Most agencies skip this because it's slower work, not because it doesn't matter.

We're part of a multi-location group or DSO. Who do you actually talk to?

Whoever your organization designates, usually a regional or clinical director for day-to-day work. We provide whatever paperwork your approver needs.

Do you guarantee we get named in AI answers?

No. We report what we measure: real questions, sent monthly, to one real AI engine, with the citation count shown either way. Anyone who guarantees a specific AI outcome is guessing.

What happens if we stop?

Nothing locks you in. The engagement runs month to month, and we put the terms in writing before anything starts.

See What AI Says About Your Practice

We send three real patient questions to a live AI answer engine and show you the exact answers it gives back — who gets named, and who doesn’t. No call required, and the report is yours either way. It’s the fastest way to see whether your practice already has the entity data and reviewer credentials this page is about, or whether that work is still ahead of you.
